EUROSENSE at the Luxembourg Earth Observation Day
The Remote Sensing Applications Department of Eurosense presented a poster (available here) regarding one of their on-going projects called «REDDiness» at the 3rd Luxembourg Earth Observation Day (LEO). The event took place on the 16th of March 2012, at the Domaine Thermal in Mondorf-les-Bains. It was co-organized by the Public Research Center - Gabriel Lippmann, the Luxembourg Space Cluster and the Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.
LEO is a one-day regional conference which intends to «increase the awareness among users and service providers (
) about the potential that space technologies offer in the domain of environmental monitoring and management». It gathers professionals from academic organizations (Université Catholique de Louvain, University of Ghent), governmental institutions /agencies (Skywin), international and European organizations (e.g. UNESCO, ESA), as well as professionals from the private sector (Deloitte).
This years conference focused on 3 topics:
Environmental monitoring and management: Remote sensing techniques for environmental management.
Water resources management: Integration of space technologies for water quality management and flood modeling when associated with hydrologic and hydraulic models.
Agriculture and forest management: Development of earth observation data processing methodologies and tools for classification and retrieval of biochemical properties of crops and soils.
EU-funded and led by EUROSENSE, REDDiness falls into the 3rd topic and aims to support Central African countries in EO-driven forest monitoring of forest degradation: a hot issue in the international climate change negotiations. As implied by its name, REDDiness literally means to be ready for REDD-Plus, which stands for Reducing carbon Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in developing countries (Plus = forest conservation, carbon stock enhancement and forest management).
Supported by a user requirement analysis done during the first phase of the project, EUROSENSE and its partners are testing the effectiveness of different types of satellite imagery (radar and very high optical satellite imageries) to detect forest degradation within 2 study sites: one in Gabon and one in the Republic of Congo. The results accuracy will be supported by extensive field measurements relying on two local partners (the MEF and CINAF).
Additionally, REDDIness intends to build the technical capacities of Central African countries in negotiations on REDD-Plus with required experience relevant for measuring, reporting and verifying (MRV) forest changes and associated carbon emissions.
