At the end of 2012, EUROSENSE was awarded by the Flemish Geographical Information Agency (AGIV) with a large LiDAR and orthophoto-project, spread over 3 years, allowing to update the Digital Height Model of the Flemish Region (including buffer). The total project area involved amounted to approx. 10.500 km² or ca. 60% of the entire Flemish Region (+ buffer).
The project consisted in a LiDAR-data acquisition during the leafless season with a point density of min. 16 points per m² (8 points per m² with at least 50% sidelap) and a simultaneous image acquisition with a GSD of 7-8cm from which 10cm orthophotos were deducted. The LiDAR data was processed into a geometrically very accurate DSM and, after filtering, into a DTM.
With a slow start due to unfavorable meteo in the months of January to April 2013, EUROSENSE caught up in the winter of 2013-2014 in order to be back on the foreseen schedule of the AGIV. In the winter of 2014-2015 the remaining map sheets were finished.
The resulting data are really astonishing and what is even better: they become open data! The very dense point clouds are an excellent data source for further value-added services, such as the creation of detailed 3D city models, archeological research, photovoltaic potential mapping and much more.
